Introduction

About

The predecessor of the College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering (CUAE) was the first Sonar major in China, established in 1953 under the Department of Naval Force Engineering, PLA Military Engineering Institute. As one of the first talent cultivation units of master, doctor and post-doctoral researchers in reform and opening-up, its underwater acoustic engineering is listed among the first batch of national key subjects in China, and ranked first in the previous discipline assessment of the Ministry of Education. It is the cradle to cultivate high-level underwater acoustic talents in China, and the source of new theories, technologies and methods of underwater acoustic technology. From Underwater Acoustic Engineering, master's and doctoral disciplines such as Acoustics, Signal and Information Processing, Communication and Information Systems have been derived in CUAE. With advanced research and teaching platforms including: one of the first national key laboratories - National Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Science and Technology, Key Laboratory of Marine Information Acquisition and Security of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Underwater Acoustic Engineering, and so on, CUAE is one of the most representative teaching and research institutions of the characteristic “shipbuilding industry, naval equipment, marine development, nuclear energy application” in Harbin Engineering University. According to the statistics, over 60% of the high-level leadership, key technical figures and scientists in the field of underwater acoustic engineering in China graduated from CUAE. The college centers around the national strategy targeting of building the maritime power. From the foundation of underwater acoustic engineering discipline, it gradually expands towards the marine information area. Now CUAE cooperates with the related domestic universities, institutes, etc. to work towards the goal of adding marine science and technology as a new first-level discipline.
