National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Underwater Acoustic Engineering

Underwater acoustic engineering experimental teaching center originated from the initial stage of PLA Military Engineering Institute, from the transducer test laboratory of sonar major established with the help of the former Soviet Union experts, which received a number of sonar equipment for experimental teaching from the Soviet naval base. In order to make better use of experimental teaching in support of talent cultivation of underwater acoustic engineering, the center has been committed to the construction of first-class experimental teaching environment for many years. It has an integrated experimental teaching platform combining acoustic experimental teaching base, electrical experimental teaching base and underwater acoustic engineering innovation laboratory. It has 8 subordinate laboratories, more than 10,000 square meters of experimental site, more than 5,000 sets of experimental equipment, and its fixed assets are more than 160 million yuan. The center also has four large-scale infrastructures, which are the large-scale low-frequency anechoic pool, underwater acoustic channel simulation pool, low noise gravity water hole and the reverberation pool. The center has the most advanced underwater acoustic test equipment and test technology for experimental teaching among the universities in China.

Led by underwater acoustic engineering,a featured discipline, the College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering has carried out a large number of scientific research and teaching activities in areas of electro-acoustics, ultrasonics, environmental acoustics, etc., which is related with acoustics, electronic technology, signal processing and other directions. It is well-known at home and abroad for its rich research areas in acoustics, and the distinguishing engineering characteristic. The college’s underwater acoustics engineering major stays to be the first in China. Relying on the College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering and the National Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Science and Technology, the experimental teaching center is the earliest practical teaching base for talent cultivation in underwater acoustic engineering, with the most complete disciplines, largest scale and highest quality in China, which provides nearly 40 experimental courses, 200 experimental projects for more than 500 undergraduates and 200 graduate students annually.

In order to improve the quality of student training, the experimental teaching center invited front-line expert teams in education, industry, and research to design the experimental teaching system, which effectively guarantees the experimental teaching contents to be systematic, advanced and practical. Through the cooperation with enterprises, the center also establishes a long-term stable joint education plan, in which it sends high-quality talents to the enterprises, meanwhile, it also supports the enterprises in personnel training and so on through utilizing its owns resources; enterprises are also invited to send instructors to the center, who are directly involved in the experimental teaching; the enterprises also provide a strong support for the construction of hardware environment in the center. In recent years, enterprises have invested more than 500 sets of teaching equipment for the center in total, with the value of more than 800 million yuan.

In the process of the implementation of the experimental teaching system, the center fully utilized the college’s advantage in research, and transformed a large number of scientific research achievements into scientific research projects. Among the experimental projects, those originated from the scientific research accounted for more than 20%. Scientific research achievementshave been transformed to more than 150 sets of experimental teaching equipment, whose value are more than 15 million yuan. The opportunities provided by the center to many undergraduate students to enter the research teams and get in touch with the research frontiers are invaluable.
