Date:2018-05-29 Author:Source:College of Underwater AcousticHits:

Presentation title: “Monitoring of Marine Carbon Capture and Storage Facilities”

Presenter: Prof. Paul White

Time: 15:00-16:30, May 29, 2018

Location: Conference Room 315 of the Underwater Acoustic Engineering Building

Short Bio of the presenter:

Paul White graduated from Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1985 with a degree in Mathematics; in 1992, he obtained his PhD in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton. He is currently the Director of that Institute. Dr. White’s main research areas include signal processing, underwater acoustics, and bioacoustics. He made significant achievements in his research areas, with more than 350 papers, and contributed in 8 books. He is a member of the underwater noise forum of the UK Marine Science Coordination Committee, and the military underwater acoustic evaluation forum.

Abstract of the presentation:

Carbon capture and storage is a technology that mitigates the increasing the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.  The use of depleted marine hydrocarbon fields to store capture carbon dioxide is an attractive proposition.  For such technology to be adopted these fields needs to be monitored for leakage and acoustics provides a useful tool set to achieve this.

This seminar will describe a sequence of projects which are directed at demonstrating the effectiveness of passive and active acoustics in this application.
