Experts from University of Southampton were Invited to the College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering for Academic Exchange

From May 27th to June 2nd, Prof. Timothy Leighton and Prof. Paul White, academician and director from Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton, were invited to the College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering for academic exchange.

The two experts, together with Prof. Yiwang Huang from our college, teach the joint curriculum ---Underwater Acoustics Theoryfor graduate students in the College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering.

During the visit, president of Harbin Engineering University Yu Yao met with two experts and gave a warm welcome to them. The president reviewed the intention of establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership between Southampton University and Harbin Engineering University in 2018 under the concept of “intelligent ocean cooperation”. In the future, with the joint efforts of both sides, the talent training cooperation project will make substantial progress. Two experts were invited to have in-depth exchange with the relevant research teams of our college, to find the intersection of scientific research, and to carry out scientific research to promote the cross-integration of multiple subjects.

Following the visit to the laboratories of the College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering, the College of Shipbuilding Engineering, the College of Automation and the College of Science, the research cooperation and personnel training of the two universities were discussed, and both sides confirmed the joint college program proposal.

At the request of both institutions, Professor Jingwei Yin, Dean of the College of Underwater Acoustic Engineering, signed a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Professor Paul White, Director of the Institute of Sound and Vibration. Both sides will strengthen cooperation in talent training and academic exchanges at all levels.

Experts Introduction:

Timothy Leighton is a Professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, the University of Southampton, UK. He is an Academician of three National Academies: the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

He graduated from Cambridge University with a Double First Master of Arts (Physics and Theoretical Physics) in 1985 and a PhD in 1988.

He has won 8 international Medals, and 6 invention awards. “Timothy Leighton’s contribution is outstanding in both breadth and depth. His is an acknowledged world leader in four fields”, wrote the citation of the 2006 Paterson Medal of the Institute of Physics.

In 2017 the Royal Society awarded him the Royal Society Clifford Paterson Medal, the comment was “for translation of his fundamental research into acoustics and its application in many areas including anti-microbial resistance, mine detection, foetal scanning, catastrophe relief, climate change and marine life”.

He chairs a research group and is the founding Chairman of NAMRIP (the Network for Anti-Microbial Resistance and Infection Prevention) and the founding Chairman of HEFUA (Health Effects of Ultrasound in Air). He advises numerous governmental and international entities.

Paul White, Director of Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton, UK, obtained his Ph.D. degree in the institute in 1992. His research interests include signal processing, underwater acoustics and bioacoustics, and he plays an outstanding role in his fields. As a Member of the British council for the collaboration of Marine science underwater noise forum and military underwater sound assessment forum, he published 350 academic papers and co-authored 8 books.
